Ümmü Seleme (radıyallahü anha)’dan rivâyete göre, şöyle demiştir: “Rasûlüllah (sallallahü aleyhi ve sellem) on üç rek’at kılarak vitr yapardı, yaşlanıp zayıf düşünce yedi rek’atla vitr yapardı.” (Ebû Dâvûd, Vitr: 3; Buhârî, Vitr: 2) Bu konuda Âişe (radıyallahü anha)’dan da hadis rivâyet edilmiştir. Ümmü Seleme hadisi hasendir. (sallallahü aleyhi ve sellem)’den on üç, on bir, dokuz, yedi, beş, üç, bir rek’at olduğu hakkında da rivâyet edilmiştir. b. İbrahim: “Rasûlüllah (sallallahü aleyhi ve sellem) on üç rek’at vitr kılardı” hadisinin manası: Vitirle birlikte gece namazı toplam on üç rek’at olurdu demektedir. Bu yüzden gece namazı vitire ilave edilerek söylenmiş oldu, diyerek, Aişe (radıyallahü anha)’dan da bir hadis rivâyet etmiştir, ayrıca şu hadisi de delil getirmektedir. “Ey Kur’ân’a mensup kimseler vitr kılın.” Burada gece namazı kastedilmiş olup, gece namazının Kur’ân’ı iyi bilenlerin vazifesi olduğu kastedilmiştir
